The Pharisees thought of obedience in terms of external conformity to certain religious rituals. Jesus rebuked them for washing the outside of the cup while their hearts remained full of greed and wickedness. He challenged them the give as alms those things that are within.

Some decisions cannot be deferred. Sometimes, not saying 'yes' is saying 'no.' Jesus says the decision we face concerning him is like that. If we do not receive him as Lord and rest upon him for salvation, then we stand against him and remain under wrath. There is no third option.
