Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for paying lip service to the prophets while rejecting their words. We must be on guard against all such hypocrisy.

Luke 11:45-54

The lawyers taught the law as a covenant of works, and thereby loaded people with burdens hard to bear. Jesus came to give rest to the heavy laden.

Luke 11:37-44

The Pharisees thought of obedience in terms of external conformity to certain religious rituals. Jesus rebuked them for washing the outside of the cup while their hearts remained full of greed and wickedness. He challenged them the give as alms those things that are within.

Luke 11:29-36

Some decisions are of little importance. Others shape the rest of our lives. Jesus said the decision we face concerning him is the most important decision we will ever make; it will determine not only the shape of our lives here and now, but our eternal destiny.

What does it mean to be with Jesus? Jesus says it is not the person who has had his life swept and put in order by Jesus' word, nor the person who is connected to Jesus by family ties, but the person who hears the word of God and keeps it, who is truly with him.

Luke 11:14-23

Some decisions cannot be deferred. Sometimes, not saying 'yes' is saying 'no.' Jesus says the decision we face concerning him is like that. If we do not receive him as Lord and rest upon him for salvation, then we stand against him and remain under wrath. There is no third option.
